The meaning of self acceptance is to accept our shortcomings as well as our accomplishments. We all have faults and successful moments in our lives. Getting through life happily and peacefully requires us to understand the balance of positive and negative. We have hard times as well as easy times. We experience ups and downs. Don't be so hard on yourself. Take the opportunities of mistakes as fuel and knowledge towards the successful outcome. A mistake allows you to eliminate one possibility that doesn't work. Great! Now you're closer to your goal!

Aspire
Self acceptance shouldn't be an excuse to avoid growing. On the contrary, you accept the bumps in the road as well as certain aspects of your personality as you're developing towards a better you.

Flexible
The more rigid you are, the less you'll be open to developing and growing as a person. Think of bamboo as it bends across the wind without breaking. If it were rigid and stiff, it would break in two. The flexibility allows it to flow effortlessly through the wind as it stays intact.

Remain Positive
Each situation has more than one side. Actually, it usually has many points of view. A friend of mine has slight stuttering that most people don't detect it including me. During counseling as a young boy, he was taught to tell people of his condition rather than hiding it. That way he's less self conscious when speaking and dealing with people because of a fear he may stutter. His friend is a speech pathologist and helps others with their stuttering. The interesting thing is that his friend has an obvious stutter. His handicap didn't keep him from moving forward in life. He took it to his advantage to help others.

Keep Your Power
Our images of ourselves are created based on what others have told us about ourselves or comparisons we make against others. You'll inevitably come across others who will insult you or attempt to hurt you. Allowing their comments to have an effect on you is giving them power. It takes practice, but it's certainly possibly to shrug off the comments of others without personalizing them.

Instead, compare yourself to yourself. Are you a stronger, wiser, healthier, more loving person today than you were a year ago? Don't compete with anybody else. Their journey in life is much different than yours. Focus on growing and developing yourself. Without having the typical runner's body, I made it a goal of mine to complete the LA Marathon in 2003. I accepted my body structure as it was, and trained none the less to meet my goals.

Personal development is a continuous process so accept yourself along the way.

Journalism, as it is often said, is the 'fourth branch of power', along with legislative, executive and judiciary, not any less mighty than those three, even if not legally endorsed in the Russian constitution. It is the power of symbolism, and it cannot be escaped, but can only "used" to bring truth, or "abused" to bring propaganda. The French sociologist Pierre Bourdier claims, that it is the opportunity to create reality with the help of words: we are approaching the time, when the social universe is described and prescribed by mass media. One cannot but agree with this view.

It is common knowledge that political parties in a country exist owing to the replication of their trappings and slogans in mass media, rather than to their strong organizations. Journalists sometimes complain that they have no real levers to affect the public opinion. Quite the opposite. Elvin Toffler, USA mass media analyst, correctly observes that new communication systems or new methods of using the old systems serve to maintain, challenge or even overthrow the government power. The above-mentioned Pierre Bourdier holds, that jounalists, led by their prejudices, values, individual perception, subconscious expectations (and sometimes conscious detrimental intentions - H. Sh.), can create the effect of reality and actually change the existing reality. This effect may have disastrous consequences.

Russia has sustained three revolutions. The latest of them, the late 1980s -1990s 'perestroika', was virtually instigated by mass media. It was they which created the notorious 'effect of reality' and changed the existing reality. The disastrous consequences of it are on hand: the post-revolutionaty trauma, affecting the public morale in the first place is still here to stay. But for nearly 17 years the mass media in Russia have been archly convincing the public that the things generally go right, and the fact that the consequences of the disintegration of the Soviet Union are disastrous may be accounted for the 'communist totalitarian regime'. Now some of them who acclaimed the 'orange scenario' in Ukraine are calling for the fourth revolution.

When we hear the discussions on the information policy of the contemporary Russian government, we are struck by the diametrical opposition of views. Some think that the mass media in Russia are 'gripped in a vice' of numerous interdictions imposed by the government. Others lament that the information policy is no more than a catchword, and the journalists enjoy absolute license. It is noteworthy that both parties understand the information policy as a kind of government's prohibitive encroachment on the mass media. But this view is definitely oversimplifying the complex phenomenon.

In fact the very essence of information processes suggests the governmental monitoring of media. The mass media are not a gigantic factory for creating information, but no more and no less than a means of a system's observation of its processes. When these observations take place the interference with the purpose of improving the situation can only be cautious, expert, intelligent and really needful. The media should be aware of the fact that the system's self-observation demands accurate registration of its processes and does not permit of anarchy of views.

The information policy introduced by the present Russian government is based on the principle of a free choice of information consumption. It prescribes that the mass media should produce a considerably full, unobtrusive and unbiased information flow, letting an individual and the community draw their conclusions, make their well-grounded and competent choices. It rests on the trust in journalists' expertise. And, as was said at the beginning, real professionals should know what can and what cannot be said and shown.

Today the freedom of speech in Russia has taken the form of a variegated sea of periodicals. Their often biased, eclectic or untrustworthy presentation of subjects is not what is needed in order to foster respect for the nation, compliance with its interests, culture and ethics in providing information. One cannot but admit that the media are a long way from this ideal.

The mass media which came out victorious in the 1990s revolution in Russia are still called 'new', although many of them are old brands with a new content. Their ethos since this revolution has been to impose their ideas on the public, to inculcate their world outlook and their approach. This ineradicable desire to monitor the 'inert' public mind has frequently prevailed over the journalists' moral code to consult the interests of the nation. Their chief arguments are: who knows the people's opinion? even sociologists cannot give veritable data about it! And then... the people are really backward: they do not see their interests, they should be prompted and directed.

All right, be the leading light. But it is impermissible to disregard public opinion tested by the acknowledged methods, like a referendum or a representative survey.

A glaring disregard of public opinion was the reaction of mass media to the All-Russia Referendum of March 17 1991, at which people, practically one and all, declared that they wanted to retain the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. What was the media response to this result? An angry torrent of abuse of the stuck-in-the-mud 'sovok' (Soviet citizen) and the fiery propaganda of the disintegration of the USSR. With every strength of their gift they convinced the people that the USSR is a complete nonentity, which might be destroyed and never repented of. There is nothing valuable in that country: its industry, education, science, the mode of life - all should be eradicated and built anew. And the biggest of all evils is the Government - let the public authority be damned, let individualism and all-in privatization be blessed...

Another example of the media slighting the people's opinion is taken from the recent past. It regards the national anthem of Russia. The representative survey showed that the population of Russia supported the anthem with the old Soviet anthem music and new words. So what was the media's response to that? A volley of irony, sarcasm and hatred, which continues reverberating in the media in the form of indignant remarks, even though the anthem was legitimately adopted by the Parliament.

Since the power of media is symbolic, journalists should know the various functions of symbols, one of which is to relieve the dynamism of the world development. Symbols also help to fasten the uniting ties in a society after the anarchic pseudo-democratic license. Therefore it was only natural for the public authority to adopt the symbols recognized by the people, rather than the ones artificially constructed by a bunch of people opposing the national mentality.

It should be noted that the present pro-western radical mass media understand the crisis of their incompatibility with the public way of thinking and realize the lack of sympathy for them. They have abandoned the idea of direct and massive information attack and begun the cautious inculcation of ideas by more sophisticated technologies. Proceeding from the sociological data, that an idea assimilated by 20 per cent of the population does not any longer require intensive information support, but begins to live its own life and proliferate, they sporadically, yet systematically launch the ideas of the unqualified rightness of the West, the USA, of the advance of Putin's dictatorship in Russia; inspire aversion to the union with 'undemocratic' Byelorussia (the Byelorussian President Alexander Lukachenko having become the virtual butt for the media), etc.

On the other hand, the media gloss over the glaring truth about the terrorist war against Russia on the Chechen territory. Even after the horrible events in Beslan on September 1-3 2004, when more than 4,000 children and teachers were held hostage and 330 people perished, the mass media, striving to present the situation in all the 'pluralism of opinions', accentuate those of them which are accusatory of the Russian public authority. For ten years the mass media have persistently represented the people's sentiment in Russia as opposed to the war in Chechnya. All this despite the data that most people, both Russian and Chechen, stand for the State's victory in this conflict. Our peoples' national consciousness is very sensitive to this issue, but as usual the central mass media have ignored the public opinion.

It is understandable, when a foreign channel shows a Chechen saying that the world is on their side - for the full independence of Chechnya from Russia, that Russia is hated by other nations, it is doomed to disintergation and that they are sure of their victory. But when the Russian channels, for the sake of wrongly understood pluralism, highlight an anti-Russian meeting abroad, complete with anti-Russian placards, even though there are no more than a handful of people at it, it is a blow to national consciousness.

Generally, the media refuse to reckon with the people's will (and the government's policy) to remember the historical eminence of Russia, to develop its own 'fairway' in the international politics.

Seeking dubious popularity (if not intentionally undermining the public conscious), they act as 'disturbers of peace', work for the split in the Russian society. The media claim the role of an arbiter in politics, but in reality they virtually resuscitate the almost abaited strifes between the supporters of socialist and market-oriented values, pro-western and Slavophile outlooks. Some programs, for example, the ORT journalist Vladimir Pozner's Vremena (Times) sometimes seem to deliberately fuel and even artificially instigate other conflicts, uncharacteristic of the Russians as a nation (whose mentality was historically internationalist, generally tolerant and collectivist), such as the oppositions Russians - 'blacks (Asians)', Christians - Muslims, people - authority, businessmen - government officials, even drivers - the State traffic safety inspectorate, etc. All this is done against the backdrop of permanent verbal humiliation of the Russians, the reminder of their inferiority; the defamation of the Soviet period of the Russian history, the Russian Orthodox church and the Russian civilization in general.

A pacifying voice is heard only too rarely, for example, Sergey Shargunov's (the journalist and the leader of 'For Motherland' Youth Union) statement about the young people in modern Russia: 'There are no real barriers between the young supporters of 'Yabloko' (the liberal democratic party headed by Grigory Yavlinsky), nationalist Bolsheviks and red-bannered Komsomol leaders. The difference of ideologies has long faded away... All sound people should discard the useless doctrines. What really matters is people, those who do not shy away from the common national values, who are ready to work for the public boon and believe in Russia's capacity to shine in the world. The battle of imaginative society models is in the past... Let us stop being scared by our own grandfathers and grandmothers'.

The mass media today is the front of counterproductive opposition. As if the unity of Russian society is necessary to Vladimir Putin alone! It is necessary to all those who are concerned about Russia's future.

Except for news programs, the choice of subjects for the information provision of our society is today arbitrarily determined by the mass media. Are they always right in their choice? The answer is 'no'. The topics of labor and creative endeavour, science, folk arts and crafts, the burning subject of poverty, the debatable subjects like the territorial self-government, etc. have all been forced out of the mass media programs. The TV journalists evidently assume that the viewers will be more interested and educated if they are shown pictures of glamorous life, luxurious dwellings and clothes of stars, models and celebtities, soap operas, innumerable mafia serials, TV games of fortune, occasionally, prefabricated political debates and preconceived political analyses, instead of the pictures of everyday work. They warp the viewers' taste by spicing their programs with obsenities, public exposures, indiscreet confessions, public insults and rows. They pride themselves of having eradicated the notorious 'weavers and steelmakers' achievements' TV stuff of the Soviet times.

Certainly, the journalists may account for their slighting the subject of creative labor by the decline of interest to it in the society. But isn't this interest worth reviving? Isn't it noble to raise the prestige of an honest working individual, capable of earning his living and simultaneously advancing the progress of his or her country? If you are the fourth branch of power, your task is not only to criticize (or serve to) the first three, nor it is to ensure the survival of your periodical by any means. Being the power you should work as an authorized government department, rendering tangible help to the society, helping people to cope with their problems, to develop and improve.

Take the subject of regional self-government in Russia. It appears, that the journalists do not understand that with the viable regional self-government the efficiency of mass media would be higher, for example, the backing of the united self-organized masses could help them fight corruption. The law of regional self-government has never been given proper attention to in the press, except for the cases of squabbles between governors and mayors. Fundamentally, the mediamen assume that their papers will read better if there is shadiness and intrigue in their information. 'Governor Urges Mayor to Resign', 'Retired Mayor Threatens to Fire All Officials Who Follow His Deputy's Instructions' run the newspaper headngs. The information itself is frequently outrageously biased and smacks of bribery by this or that disputing party, rather than of the journalsts' genuine interest in the common cause. Most of the audience are sure that a crying elderly lady, say, in a delapidated hut will be given no real help, but serve as a mere tool to get a mayor dismissed.

Yet what is really needed is that jounalists clarify the essence of the law to the people, let them know their rights. For example, for several years there has been despoliation of forests, despite the protests of the people of the nearby settlements and villages. No one can get the lumbermen to stop or even be more careful. The dwellers of the settlements do not know that under the regional self-government law they have considerable rights for their lands and forests. Probably, neither do the journalists, who even confuse the terms 'regional self-government' and ' local administration'.

Most central mass media in Russia stand up in a united front against Vladimir Putin's strengthening of the 'vertical of power', disparaging it as the onslaught on democracy. One can only imagine their outcry if Putin repeats the Russian czar Alexander II's decision in 1861 to appoint a centralized institution of Senate-approved arbitrators - intermediaries, helping the regional authorities to settle the issues of repartition of estate between the landowners and the former serf peasants. They also observed the organization and functioning of peasants' self-governments, which at that time, just like today, placed the governors' authorities at certain disadvantage. The latter had preferred to keep the people in backwardness and ignorance.

The repartition of estate is too serious a matter to be done without control of a disinterested party. Now, with the adoption in Russia of the law on private property for land, people often quite suddenly find themselves living on a new landowner's estate. There are cases of country communities wishing, for example, to repair an old road or bridge and being refused by their landowners. The mass media used to be fervent advocates of the law on private property for land. Why aren't they vocal in exposing the negative consequences of land privatization and calling for their amendment? This would be their work for the common cause.

Sociologists have invented the method of 'participant observation' . Unfortunately, very few journalists have adopted this approach, although is it the observation 'from within' that can give the truest view on the society and the possible solutions of its problems.

So far the impression is that the information war is being waged against Russia on its own territory. The specific stratagem of this war is that the people do not realize they are being fought against; their opponents profess themselves to be their guides and tutors. They claim to be teaching the Russian nation what 'democracy', 'freedom of speech', and 'panhuman values' are. Simultaneously the national mentality is being undermined and destroyed, which results in lowering the morale, hence, selling up industry, plundering the country's resources, disorganization of the army and security services, etc.

It is time for us to realize, that the mass media, raised to unprecedented heights by information technologies, virtually guide our lives, even though they lack responsibility, are indifferent to the actual demands of the society, do not attempt to foresee the prospects for social development, disregard, distort and transform the public opinion and values. It is also time for the mass media to conduct an unbiased self-analysis, stop imposing counterproductive ideas on the public, and start showing themselves not as combatants with, but as servants of the community.

In 2000, Earnhardt began looking like his old self. Many believed it was due to neck surgery he'd had to repair the injury he suffered at Talledega in '96. He won 2 of the most exciting races of that season. One was at Atlanta when he beat Bobby Labonte to the finish by.006 seconds, the other occurred at Talledega when Earnhardt gained 17 positions in 4 laps to take the victory. With these wins under his belt, Earnhardt climbed to 2cnd place in the point standings. But wrecks at Watkins Glen and Bristol, plus poor performances in a couple of other races would prevent him from gaining another title.

It was a beautiful day for racing, February 18, 2001. The first official race of the year, the 'Super Bowl' of NASCAR, the Daytona 500. Despite not winning the Twin 125 qualifying race he'd dominated for most of the '90's, Dale Earnhardt looked relaxed and confident before the start of the race. A spectacular wreck in which several cars were eliminated from competing occurred late in the race. After a red flag stop for track cleanup, the race continued with Dale Earnhardt, son Dale Jr., and his DEI teammate Micheal Waltrip in front. With 3 laps to go, it was Waltrip in the lead followed by Earnhardt Jr. and Dale Sr. Earnhardt Sr. had been fighting off Sterling Marlin's attempts to take the third position.

During the last lap, Earnhardt was racing three wide with Marlin and Kenny Schrader. For reasons unknown, Earnhardt's car suddenly dove down the track. The left rear quarter of Earnhardt's car made slight contact with Marlin's front bumper. The #3 car ran down off the track and onto the apron, then started to head back up the track. Earnhardt's car hit Schrader's car and Dale ran head long into the wall at 160 miles per hour. Compared to similar wrecks of that type, it didn't appear to anyone that it was that bad. Waltrip went on to win the race. EMT crews, along with Dale Jr. rushed to the crash scene. Earnhardt was taken to Halifax Medical Center by ambulance. Some hours later NASCAR president, Mike Helton announced Dale Earnhardt's death. Not just NASCAR, but the whole sports world was stunned. The once seemingly unbeatable Dale Earnhardt was gone.

But as a friend pointed out to me, he probably died right where it fitted him. Doing what he loved so much, and was so damn good at. Dale Earnhardt Jr. races still, and has some accomplishments under his belt. Dale Earnhardt Sr., he was competitive, stubborn, tough, to his friends and family, just a good 'ole boy from North Carolina, and he was a winner. He was all those things. I'd like to think when he got to heaven, Ralph Earnhardt was there to meet his son. With a handshake, a pat on the back, and a comment that went something like this, "Damn, boy, you did pretty good. I'm proud of ya."

The signs said it, the chants were all proclaiming it. The first Tea Party-based rally I ever attended was filled with assertions that our President was taking us down the road to Socialism. With many of them, however, if you asked about social security or medicare they'd tell you that that was their right and you couldn't take it away. Well, that's actually not even the most glaring way in which they were... not mistaken, because they're right... just incomplete in their assessment of our current economic condition. We've been a socialist society for years. So, let's take a look at Socialism. The idea is that a group of central planners can set market conditions from the outside that are "fair" to all participants and stimulate growth. The problem is that it just doesn't work. When you attempt to set by fiat, you take away the incentives to production. No one or nothing produces to capacity. The primary problem is that it leads to fascism. Nobel Prize winning economist Ludwig von Mises and fellow Austrian FA Hayek have both discussed this issue in depth. The Road to Serfdom, Hayek's seminal work discusses Democratic Socialism that led to the fascist regimes in Germany and Italy in the run-up to World War II.

The form of socialism we have followed is a bit more deceptive, but it amounts to the same thing. Instead of boards of bureaucrats making all economic decisions, which ultimately leads to the appointment of a totalitarian system, we've used a combination of congressional grants to bureaucrats and the use of subsidies and incentives to drive economies through certain favored industries and favored companies. It's quite laughable to suggest that our current economic condition has anything to do with Capitalism run amok. Sadly, it is entirely the opposite that is true. Capitalism was strangled, snuffed out, and buried in the early 20th century. Small vestiges remain, usually in new industries formed by entrepreneurs, but the lure of regulating competition, subsidies, and planning usually quashes it in relatively short order.

Well, if Capitalism is so great, why do businessmen support Government intervention so often? Two words come to mind: Profit Motive.

In a capitalistic system when you have a business idea that is profitable, it draws competition. Increased supply of the good or service brought about by competition lowers profits. So, with the expansion of powers available to the Federal Government, businesses can seek protection for their profits by supporting government regulation of their industries. This erects what are known as barriers to entry. It makes the initial cost of getting into a particular industry higher and slows the rate in which competition can impact their profits. The types of regulations can be anything from licensing requirements, forced unionization, permitting requirements, reporting mandates, capitalization mandates, government subsidies, mandates that products follow a certain patented methodology, or by restricting access to materials. These restrictions on competition, restraints on trade, barriers to entry, and other government supported monopolies form up what is known as Corporatism. Basically it's a combination of government and government sponsored corporate planning.

We can't get capitalism back. Even if all the old regulatory schemes, bureaus, boards, and planning authorities were wiped out. They'd just come right back. So long as our Government has the authority to shape so much of our economic life, so long as they have unchecked authority to pass any regulation, mandate or tax, then there will be corporations and individuals who will pursue these to maximize their profits. On this front I have good news and bad news.

The Good News is that our Founding Fathers drafted a Constitution that limited the power of government to impact every economic aspect of our lives.

The Bad News is that we've been ignoring these limitations for so long that the vast Majority of people have no idea that they ever existed in the first place.

Everyone has heard of her, but how about Isabel Paterson and Rose Wilder Lane? All three women can be said to have lain the roots for the libertarian movement of today.

All three published important works in 1943, pre-dating Hayeks Road to Serfdom and other seminal Libertarian works. Rands The Fountainhead, Lanes The Discovery of Freedom and Patersons The God of the Machine were all put out in 1943 birthing many important ideas of the Libertarian movement. Explaining Americas exceptionalism, defending the greatness of the founding documents and espousing on the importance of individual liberties these women are of great importance to anyone interested liberty and freedom. While Paterson and Lanes books are difficult to find, they can be located with a little digging, Laissez- Faire books would be a good place to start.

Ayn Rands books are available just about everywhere. Covering the well known like F.A. Hayek and the less known but influential (within the movement) like Murray Rothbrand this book has all the bases covered. The chapter "Goldwater, The Objectivist Crack-up, and Hippies of the Right" had some laugh out loud moments. Covering the Austrian School of Economics and the Chicago School this book explains sometimes mundane and complex subjects in an interesting and understandable manner. Milton Freidman is well covered and as one of the most popular Libertarians besides Ayn Rand.

!1: Best Buy One of the things that I think speaks well of Glenn Beck is the kind of crazed hatred he inspires in the Progressive / Collectivist / Socialist class. I am sure this book will be wildly criticized, with few to zero citations, and the non-arguments against it will be personal attacks against Beck.

But I have read this book and while no one will mistake it for Milton Friedman, David Ricardo, and Adam Smith, it's head and shoulders better than most anything we are being told by Beck's peers on radio and TV. And given the importance and timeliness of what Beck is saying, I recommend that everyone read and think about what Beck is saying. We need to wake up, people. We are broke. While we might have some cash in our wallets, our long term obligations are frightening. Changes are coming. The only choice we have is to plan and manage them on our own or wait until the train leaves the tracks and disaster forces us to change.

Part I takes us through the history and how thrift, savings, and productivity were transformed by the Progressives into bad things and what the revaluation of those values has been a big contributor to our current crisis. My only question of the material is whether or not Andrew Carnegie really did make a major contribution to the University of Chicago since it is so closely associated with John D. Rockefeller. Maybe he did. But either way, it is no big deal. Chances are, you will learn a lot by reading this section.

Part II discusses how honest government accounting went out the window during the Reagan administration and has gotten steadily worse. Beck demonstrates why we have to look at the off book spending to realize that there really was no surplus under Clinton and the deficits were always works than the Feds ever admitted. He also shows how the huge Federal Government spontaneously calls into being lobbyists to work on funneling Federal Spending to their clients in return for helping those in power stay in power. Frankly folks, the number one way to get the Feds out of our lives is to quit asking them to give you stuff. Shrink the demand, shrink the spending, and most of their power goes away.

Part III is the most controversial because you may or may not share Beck's values and his 8 step plan for restoring the values, as he sees them, that made this country wealthy, powerful, and great. What are they? 1) Realize that we have individual rights and that collective rights are an excuse to grab power and chain people to the government. 2) Realize that we have equality of opportunity and that trying to make equal outcomes is just a government way of grabbing more power to try and do something that cannot be done. 3) Believe in America and her greatness. 4) Refashion government to be closer to the people. Decentralization takes away power from the elitists who want government as free of actual control by the people as they can get it. 5) Give the Progressives a taste of the activism they have been giving us for more than a century. 6) Cut spending everywhere. A little, some more, and a lot. 7) Stop printing money. Create policies that support a sound currency with real value. 8) Live your own life so you are "out of the system". Don't allow yourself to become dependent on the government and vote for those that support liberty and responsibility rather than dependence

Can we do it? Yes! Will we do it? That remains to be seen. I hope we do.

In Amerika, 2068, political correctness and nanny-statism have come to the end of the line. From the rotting cityscape populated by sullen gadget-addled sheeple down to the omnipresent do-goodism enforced by bureaucratic thugs with itchy taser fingers, the oppression of Grice's progressive communitarian paradise is palpable. The protagonist, exiled from the last bastion of freedom on the planet - Goldstein - is on a mission. Only he's not exactly sure what it is. And as he navigates the equal-opportunity nastiness of what Amerika has become, he realizes that maybe the place he left behind was better than he originally thought.

A genuinely kick-ass read, Goldstein crystallizes the essence of Atlas Shrugged in a deliciously readable, lecture-free package. After reading this book, the question might not be "Who is John Galt?" but rather "Where is Goldstein and how the hell do I get there?" on Sale!

He lived in an era which thought it not unusual to work in both the physical and social sciences. Central economies fail because 1) Society has too much knowledge to be centrally commanded (2) all economic decisions become political and thus authoritarian and noncreative and (3) there is no way to set value (price) under Socialism.

THE SENSORY ORDER dealt with epistomology, then he branched out to philosophy and politics. As an example of how Socialist we have become, Hayek's views were called ""liberal" and are now called "conservative" despite the fact that they're unchanged. He wrote one piece "WHY I AM NOT A CONSERVATIVE" which is a clarion call for libertarianism and classical liberalism.

The book examines the clashes between intellectual giants - von Mises, Popper, Mach, Wittgenstein (his cousin) and others. He was a secularist, a capitalist and a political liberal in the classical sense. His work on monetary policy still affects us (adjusting interest rates to increase or decrease the money supply, "floating" currencies externally). Almost as an afterward Hayek issued a brilliant statement. The aim of all economists is the increase in material wealth. He wanted this accomplished through an increase in wealth (capitalism) rather than a confiscation / redistribution of wealth (socialism / central run economies). After the fall of communism, and certainly after this wide-ranging demolition of Marxism by Austrian scholars, who can possibly defend Marxism? Plenty of people, many of them smart otherwise but uneducated in economics. This book is the antidote, covering the whole history of this nutty and dangerous system of thought

It begins by an alternatively hilarious and tragic introduction by the editor Yuri Maltsev. He describes in vivid detail life in the Soviet Union, which, he points out contrary to myth, was indeed an attempt to realize Marx's vision. Of course the system moved away from the strict doctrine, lest everyone in the country be reduced to the most primitive possible economic conditions. He describes a society in which nothing works, ethics and morals collapse, and absurdities abound in every aspect of daily life. It is a priceless first-hand account.

Next come sweeping essays by David Gordon and Hans-Hermann Hoppe that get into the guts of the Marxian system and show where it went wrong from both a philosophical and economic perspective. Hoppe in particular here shows how Marx took classical liberal doctrine on the state and misapplied it in ways that contradicted all logic and experience.

Gary North provides a devastating look at Marx the man, while Ralph Raico zeros in on the Marxian doctrine of class. Finally, and as a triumphant finish, Rothbard offers a wholesale revision of the basis of Marxism. It was not economics, he says. It was the longing for a universal upheaval to overthrow all things we know about the world and replace it with a crazed fantasy based secular/religious longings. Rothbard finds all this in the unknown writings of Marx and his post-millennial predecessors in the history of ideas.

This book made its first appearance in 1992, and has been out of print all these years. It is fantastic to have it back and available in this very affordable edition.

±1±: Best Buy This book is amazing. Its a systematic analysis of Marxism and is packed full of information which should give anyone plenty of ammo to argue against a Marxist and his "theories".
I have only one complaint and that is that im not overly fond of the chapter about Marx's life. Even though i do think it was enlightening i think the author at times puts too much of his opinion into it. I know this will suit/please some people but i believe it would have been better if written from a more neutral point of view.

However the rest of the chapters are brilliant. The intro were Yuri tells us about his life in Russia, and the extremes some people would go to in order to make a living and feed themselves.

Then from chapter to chapter. The first is to deal with the some of the economic problems of Marxism such as the Labor Theory of Value, the role of profit, the failure of Marx to account for time-preference, social calculation, etc. It inquires critically and takes them all to task. The second chapter deals with the role of class conscioussness Hans Herman-Hoppe. The third is the biography on Marx, most notably his bourgeoise background.

My favourite chapter is the 4th on Marxist Method and Mercantilism. I feel as though its given me a much better understanding of capitalism as well as helping me win many arguments against people who have tried to put it down.

And then the last two, The Classical Liberal Roots of the Doctrine of Classes, and Marx: Communist as Religious Eschatologist. The Classical Liberal Roots is informative and the last chapter is just chilling!

I would love to hand this book to all Marxists and say "when youre done I hope you dont feel too bad about the time youve wasted on Marx"

The book offers persuasive warnings against the dangers of central planning, along with what Orwell described as ''an eloquent defense of laissez-faire capitalism.'' Hayek shows that the idea that ''under a dictatorial government you can be free inside,'' is nothing less than a grievous fallacy. Such dictatorial governments prevent individual freedoms and they often use psychological measures to perform ''an alteration of the character of the people.'' Gradually, the people yield their individuality to the point where they become part of the collectivist mass.

±1±: Best Buy Not long ago I reached the realization that all forms of tyranny: Nazism, fascism, whatever it is that Chavez calls what he is doing, the lunatic in North Korea, Communism, etc. are one and the same: excuses for a small group of people headed by an 'enlighten' leader, to take away the freedom, to control, to grab most of the money and all the power of a nation. One thing in common, the word 'socialism' is present in most of their systems, from National Socialism (Hitler) or all flavors and intensities of Communism at the different stages. Basically, the 'good of the people' is only an excuse for a bunch of greedy and unscrupulous men to grab and hold to power, eliminating all dissent. Well, Hayek preceded me by decades, and he quotes others (Tocqueville, etc.) saying basically the same much before him. Unsurprisingly, his analysis and predicted consequences, are proven right on, as we speak in Europe and right here in America. I think this book should be suggested reeding in every high school, on Citizenship tests for new immigrants, and wherever possible. You see, I started the previous phrase with 'required' reading, instead of 'suggested'. It is so easy to fall for socialistic, community-planning thinking. It is always with good intentions that peoples start the road to their demise towards any form of socialism, as it necessarily implies overriding some or all of the individual's will and choices for what is 'best' for the 'greater good'. How striving for what we understand to be the best for a community, actually slaves and dooms it. How any attempt, as noble and well inspired, to control, direct or determine what other people should do, it carries its own demise. How there is no substitute to freedom in its purest form (not the 'higher' level of freedom advertised by socialists of all flavors), how nobody has the right to chose for others, how the common good is only the sum of individuals freely choosing their own good according to their own values, how a 'planned society' is a slaved society, how governing to satisfy people's needs and happiness does not accomplish either one. How we need the threat of failure as much as the promise of success to get up from our butts and do something (like work, for instance). How people that are 'taken care off' lost their freedom and their motivation, and their societies are doomed. on Sale!
